Commonly associated with the progressive loss of peripheral vision, glaucoma is initially painless and usually not associated with any visual symptoms. It is a leading cause of blindness, and the risk increases with age. Regular exams and testing are important for identifying those at risk and for monitoring treatment plans. There are several types of glaucoma, including:

Open angle glaucoma

Open angle glaucoma is most common in the United States. Risk factors include family history, hypertension, diabetes, appearance of the optic nerve and eye pressure. Therapy usually includes special medicated eyedrops to reduce eye pressure, but may also involve laser eye surgery. Monitoring eye pressure and measuring changes in the peripheral field are essential. Control usually means that eye pressure is acceptable and there is little to no loss of peripheral visual field. Only a thorough eye examination can determine if a patient has glaucoma.

Angle recession glaucoma

Angle recession glaucoma is associated with a history of severe blunt trauma. This type results in higher intraocular pressure due to ocular damage from the impact. Patients usually do not experience symptoms, and it may take years to develop.

Acute angle closure glaucoma

Acute angle closure glaucoma is a true eye emergency. Patients may experience sudden eye pain, headache, halos around lights and nausea. Eye pressure quickly reaches dangerously high levels. Laser surgery is the most definitive treatment.

Other types of glaucoma are less common, yet can be detected by examination. Treatment and management of glaucoma is essential to preventing long-term vision loss. The key to successful management is early detection and regular follow-up examination.

Glaucoma and cataract surgery

Dr. Diamante is the first ophthalmologist to perform the new I-Stent procedure in Rhode Island. This procedure is used for glaucoma patients undergoing cataract surgery. During the cataract surgery the microscopic I-Stent is placed in the eye to reduce pressure and minimize any use of glaucoma eye drops.
