Giulio Diamante, M.D., is a nationally recognized cataract surgeon. Dr. Diamante is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He received his medical degree from the renowned Boston University School of Medicine. He completed internship medical training at Brown University School of Medicine, and ophthalmology residency and fellowship training in corneal research at Boston University School of Medicine.

What are Cataracts?
If you are having trouble with night driving, glare from headlights, reading, watching TV or any of the things you like to do that require excellent vision, you may have cataracts. The natural lens inside the eye is normally clear. A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens. Cataracts are a normal part of the aging process. Most people will develop cataracts over the course of their lifetimes.
There is no acceptable medical treatment to reverse or prevent the development of cataracts. Once they form, the only way to see clearly again is with surgery in which the cataract lens is removed
from the eye and replaced with a new, artificial lens.

Advanced Lens Options
Advanced technology lenses are soft, foldable and gently placed in the eye to replace the natural lens that developed into a cataract.
Most lenses are made of plastic materials. Advanced technology lenses available include presbyopic (correcting distance, intermediate and near vision) and astigmatism-correcting. Presbyopic lenses provide a broad range of vision correction to reduce the need for eyeglasses and contact lenses. As the name implies, astigmatism-correcting lenses reduce the amount of astigmatism, improving vision quality at all ranges. Standard monofocal lenses, in contrast, are designed to provide a limited range of clear focus primarily for distance vision. Patients with monofocal lenses typically require reading glasses for near vision tasks such as reading, cell phone use, and computer activities.
The lens that is right for you will depend on your ocular health, along with your occupational and lifestyle needs.It is important that you thoroughly evaluate your surgical and lens options.
CUSTOM BLADELESS
Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery
Dr. Diamante is the only custom bladeless laser- assisted cataract surgeon in Rhode Island. In addition to using the LenSx® femtosecond laser to accomplish many of the surgical steps that
were traditionally performed with metal blades, Dr. Diamante uses the latest innovations in cataract surgery such as no-stitch, no-needle, small- incisions, and soft, foldable (non-rigid) artificial lenses for
the best possible outcomes.
There are many benefits to laser-assisted cataract surgery. The precise, reproducible steps performed by the laser results in better lens positioning, less trauma to the eye and more predictable vision results. The LenSx® laser has revolutionized astigmatism management with cataract surgery. Astigmatism correction performed with the LenSx® laser is more accurate and refined as opposed to performing the procedure with a hand-held, metal blade.

Dr. Diamante offers a range of treatment options to suit your vision goals. Your eyes are unique. Dr. Diamante will evaluate your eyes to determine if you are a candidate for custom bladeless laser-assisted cataract surgery. He will assess your desired visual outcome and help you decide which cataract treatment option will achieve your vision goals. Dr. Diamante offers four vision options: advanced custom vision, custom vision, custom astigmatism-correction, and basic vision.
Insurance Considerations
It is important to note that Medicare and most insurance carriers consider cataract surgery a medically-covered procedure. They do not, however, consider reducing your dependence on eyeglasses to improve your vision as a “medical necessity.”
Your insurance will not cover the additional costs associated with the laser procedure and any of the advanced technology lenses used to reduce your dependence on eyeglasses.If you have a medically-qualifying cataract, your insurance company will be billed for the cataract surgery component. You will be financially responsible for the additional elective portion of the procedure, along with any co-payments, co-insurance or deductibles.

With our advanced custom vision option, Dr. Diamante uses the latest ophthalmic technology to maximally reduce your dependence on eyeglasses after cataract surgery.
This option includes:
- Custom bladeless laser-assisted cataract
surgery, which allows Dr. Diamante to achieve
greater precision while using less ultrasonic
energy at the time of surgery, leading to a lens. - A presbyopic advanced technology lens
correcting distance, intermediate and near vision. - Depending on the degree of your astigmatism, correction can be performed with the LenSx® Laser or a specialized version of the presbyopic lens.
- ORA (Optiwave Refractive Analysis) System® Technology during your surgery to confirm the proper lens correction and orientation for optimal visual outcomes.
With our custom vision option, Dr. Diamante will tailor your surgical plan to reduce your dependence on eyeglasses. Custom vision is most commonly used for those patients who want excellent distance vision and do not mind wearing eyeglasses for near and intermediate vision after cataract surgery.

- Treatment of lower amounts of astigmatism with the LenSx® Laser
- ORA (Optiwave Refractive Analysis) System® Technology during your surgery to confirm the proper lens correction and orientation for optimal visual outcomes.

Custom Astigmatism-Correction
You may have astigmatism and not even know it. It can occur along with nearsightedness and farsightedness and, if present, will blur your vision at all distances. The most common type of astigmatism is caused by an abnormal shape of the cornea, the outer window of the eye. Without proper planning traditional cataract surgery can sometimes lead to more astigmatism than prior to surgery.
This option includes:
- Custom bladeless laser-assisted cataract surgery, which allows Dr. Diamante to achieve greater precision while using less ultrasonic energy at the time of surgery, leading to a better recovery.
- An advanced technology astigmatism-correcting monofocal lens for significant astigmatism improving distance and night vision.
- ORA (Optiwave Refractive Analysis) System® Technology during surgery to confirm the proper lens correction and orientation for optimal visual outcomes.
TREATMENTS
Expectations After Surgery
You will be released soon after the procedure to go home and relax. Dr. Diamante is only a phone call away to address any questions or concerns. A clear plastic shield will be placed over your eye to protect it until the next morning. Typically, most patients see an improvement in their vision soon after surgery, although some degree of blurriness is normal. Most eyes are healed within three weeks.
Complete vision recovery varies from patient to patient. Usually, patients return to their regular activities within a few days. Dr. Diamante will closely monitor your healing to maximize your vision.

Basic Vision
With our basic vision option, Dr. Diamante will help you achieve overall improved vision. Basic vision is for those patients who do not mind wearing eyeglasses all the time to correct any residual nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism after cataract surgery.
